Blessing home is a non-profit, non-government organization formed to address the issues of de-addiction and rehabilitation in Mizoram. It was founded in 1991 by Mr. V.L. Ruata Ralte. Blessing Home is a registered organization under the Mizoram Societies Registration Act, 2005 and its registration number is SR – 25 of 1992.
Since its establishment 1991, the organization has run a rehabilitation center for drug users in Sakawrtuichhun, a locality in the outer limits of Aizawl city, the capital of Mizoram. Although the center was initially funded solely through donations by well-wishers, with the invaluable help of the Mizoram Social Welfare Department, it received a grant-in-aid from the Ministry of Social Empowerment and Justice in 1999, and continues to do so till date. This grant-in-aid is currently funding a 15-bed rehabilitation center which accommodates individuals who have problems with substance abuse, i.e. alcohol, opiates, benzodiazepines, marijuana etc.
Since 2003, the organization has undertaken a Targeted Intervention (TI) project for drug users under the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS). Under the TI, the organization is currently running a drop-in-center (DIC) in Aizawl west. The DIC caters to the needs of drug users through the implementation of programs such as Needle/Syringe Exchange Program (NSEP), abscess care and management, awareness on HIV prevention and co-related diseases viz. Hepatitis-C, Tuberculosis and counseling; individual, group and family.
Since its humble beginnings, the organization has developed and maintained a healthy relationship with CBOs and FBOs within its vicinity. The rapport with these organizations has assisted the Blessing Home staff in generating awareness and advocating on issues related to substance abuse and HIV. The organization prioritizes the prevention of drug use by spreading awareness on its negative impacts on a grass root level on various platforms. These programs mainly target pre-adolescents. The organization also advocates against stigma and discrimination towards drug users and emphasizes on the importance of creating an enabling environment for recovering drug users.
The main focus of the organization has been, and always will be the rehabilitation of victims of substance abuse. The foundation of the rehabilitation center is based on the concept of Whole Person Recovery (WPR). As such, most of the staff employed in the center are individuals who are recovering addicts themselves. In our approach to recovery, we do not base our patients’ success solely on abstinence but on the development and maintenance of the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of their lives which have been extensively damaged due to substance abuse.
Physical: After detoxification, depending on their personal inclinations, patients are required to engage in physical activities such as sports, gardening, poultry farming or piggery. Other than their obvious physical benefits, these practices instill discipline, self-confidence, cultivate self-worth and develop new skills in our patients. In light of its therapeutic attributes, both physical and mental, Yoga is also practiced by patients and staff alike.
Mental: Since addiction is a psychological/psychosocial disorder, individual counseling and group therapy are an integral part of the rehabilitation process in our center. Our staff has been trained and equipped to conduct sessions on addiction, recovery, lapse and relapse prevention, maintaining sobriety etc. Patients are neither coerced nor pressured to embrace these ideas but rather encouraged to come to their own conclusions/decisions through self-exploration and self-scrutiny with the guidance and assistance of counselors.
Spiritual: It is the organizations’ firm belief that the road of recovery goes hand in hand with the spiritual guidance that can only be found with God. Prayer services, scripture reading and spiritual counseling, both individual and group are fundamental activities which are the cornerstone of the rehabilitative process practiced by the center.
